Itinerary Description

On this Jewish Ghetto food tour you explore one of Venice’s most charming and historic districts. Rich in culture and traditions this part of the city has been the backdrop for many books and movies, including the Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino. Did you know that the English word Ghetto that is now used the world over was originally a Venetian term!

The tour itinerary crosses the Ghetto and Cannaregio. There are wonderful little canals, magnificent churches, quaint bridges and much more to see as you visit more than six local eateries on you journey of exploration.

The tour takes you to an old Coffee roaster, one of the enduring symbols of Venice. Were you aware that Venice was the first city in Italy to drink coffee, imported from the East! As you wander through the streets and squares of the Old Ghetto (ghetto Vecio) your guide will tell you about the history of this fascinating district as well as recounting interesting curiosities.

You will see the historic synagogues of Venice, including the Rabbi’s House and have the opportunity to taste traditional Jewish-Venetian dishes such as Sarde al Saorand, artichoke bottoms served with super kosher wine. In-between the stops to savour the delightful food and wine you will take a relaxing stroll along the romantic walkways called “fondamenta”.

There are more than 400 bridges in total in the city of Venice and we take a walk across the oldest bridge. Here we stop in a restaurant where the local gondoliers and residents come to eat. You will get to sample dishes of pasta and risotto, unique to Venice.

We will visit a typical old bakery where you can taste special biscuits and cakes including the famous zaeti and buranelli.

This is a wonderful tour. A combination of art, culture, history, food and wine! There is so much to eat, come hungry! There is some much to see, bring your camera! You will enjoy great food and enchanting views of Venice at night. See churches and alleyways lit up and the canals sparking in the moonlight; a little like a glass of prosecco!

A great tour, a magical experience!!
